Fort Stanwix (Schuyler)
First occupied by American Colonial troops in 1758, Fort Stanwix served to defend a critical portage in the Mohawk Valley during the French and Indian Wars. After the site was abandoned in 1768, it was reoccupied by the now American Revolutionaries in 1776, with the site renamed as Fort Schuyler. The site was the center point of a British siege in August 1777, while simultaneously providing a support role in the Battle of Oriskany on 6 August. This final version of the fort burned down on 13 May 1781, and was not rebuilt.
To celebrate the Bicentennial, the National Park Service reconstructed the fort to its 1776 specifications in downtown Rome, New York. The object shown here was built from drone data collected from an overflight on 8 March 2026 with the support of the NPS.
