Global Gettysburg Research Project
The Global Gettysburg Project is a joint venture between the Digital History Center and the International History Division that seeks to reframe the iconic Civil War battle within its international context, revealing connections that extend far beyond the borders of the United States. Using ArcGIS, students and instructors employ a comprehensive suite of digital tools—including spatial analysis, data visualization, and interactive storytelling features—to examine both tactical movements on the battlefield and the battle’s global impacts. This digital initiative highlights the ways in which the Battle of Gettysburg reverberated across the world. By leveraging these advanced digital capabilities to analyze historical data, the project offers visitors a comprehensive understanding of how this pivotal moment in United States history shaped—and was shaped by—global forces of the 19th century.
